Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Syed Waqar Hasan, who serves patients in Spring Hill, Florida.

Licensed in Florida and Missouri, Dr. Hasan is a general adult psychiatrist with special interest in addiction and geriatric psychiatry. He is the Owner of Horizons Mental Health, LLC in Spring Hill, Florida.

The doctor is convinced that personalization means more than the individual genetic pattern of the body. He and his team believe that no amount of technology can replace the trust of each person on his or her personal caregiver, and this trust can only be developed if physicians and other providers have a genuine interest in the person who is their patient. With this in mind, they favor strategy which leads to prevention over symptomatic treatment and focus their efforts in minimizing the negative impact of medical interventions on quality of life. 

With out-patient and in-patient experience, Dr. Waqar currently serves as the Director for Springbrook Hospital’s Partial Hospitalization Program and is affiliated with North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital in Wesley Chapel, Florida. He served as the Medical Director of Springbrook Hospital between 2013 and 2017.

Having been serving the area as an educator, speaker, and medical professional, Dr. Waqar has been involved in private practice and community service. He volunteers and serves on the Board of Directors at the Crescent Community Clinic in Spring Hill, which provides free medical career to uninsured individuals. He also serves on the Board for the Hernando County Mental Health Alliance and People Helping People. 

A 1991 MBBS graduate of the internationally recognized Dow Medical University in Pakistan, he completed his training in psychiatry at St. Fintans Psychiatric Hospital in Port Laoise, Ireland. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his residency at Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC) in 2006, where he was elected Chief Resident.

While at KUMC, he was asked to work on a research paper with Dr. Penik on the recent advances in the treatment of alcoholism. After completing his residency, he worked at Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal, Missouri. 

For the purpose of advancing his efforts, the doctor remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, and the Hernando County Mental Health Alliance.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. They are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.
