Houston, TX – Dr. Alexander Schutz, a distinguished figure in the realm of cardiothoracic surgery, is making significant strides in the field with his multifaceted expertise and unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare standards. 

Holding various esteemed titles at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Schutz serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Associate Program Director of the Thoracic Surgery Integrated Residency Program, and Site Director of the MEDVAMC - Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. Furthermore, he holds the positions of Assistant Surgical Director of Mechanical and Circulatory Support and Co-Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery Critical Care at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.

With a comprehensive scope of practice encompassing general cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, and surgical critical care, Dr. Schutz stands out as a highly skilled professional in the discipline. His proficiency as a boarded surgical intensivist is evidenced by his specialized focus on enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery, advanced ventilator management, and innovative lung rescue strategies, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Dr. Schutz offers a holistic range of services for structural heart disease, including minimally invasive cardiac surgery, trans-catheter procedures like TAVR and MitraClip, and robotic interventions. Moreover, he plays a pivotal role in managing congestive heart failure through the utilization of mechanical circulatory support and left ventricular assist device implantation.

Dr. Schutz’s academic journey is equally impressive, having earned his Medical Degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Throughout his training, he honed his skills at prestigious institutions such as the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as administrative chief resident. His research contributions in cardiothoracic surgery have been recognized at national meetings of esteemed organizations like the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.

As a testament to his unwavering dedication to excellence, Dr. Schutz holds triple board certifications from the American Board of Surgery (in general surgery and surgical critical care) and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (in thoracic and cardiac surgery).
