About

Dr. Kiel is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist.  She received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Cultural Anthropology and Women’s Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  She then went on to study Counseling Psychology as a graduate student in Nairobi, Kenya before ultimately earning her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Chicago.

Dr. Kiel was trained as a general psychologist and is comfortable addressing most presentations appropriate for outpatient care.  She works primarily with adults from early to late adulthood.  She specializes in Health Psychology, trauma, and working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.  Since 2010, Dr. Kiel has focused on treating those who have been impacted by cancer, including diagnosed individuals, caregivers, and the bereaved.  She is an active member of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS).

Dr. Kiel utilizes an insight-oriented approach to psychotherapy, and draws from principles of attachment (how we connect to others) and existential (values and meaning-making) theory.  She also believes that for all individuals, it is crucial to take into account subjective life experiences, such as gender, race, faith, health, and sexual orientation, to understand one’s sense of self and the broader world.  Specific therapeutic modalities that Dr. Kiel utilizes include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness meditation, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
