Richard R. Whitlock M.D.'s Expert Contributions
  • Acid reflux and the Pfizer vaccine?

I believe it would be safe. GI symptoms that have been reported with any frequency have been vomiting and diarrhea. I am not aware relux symptoms having been reported READ MORE

  • ECG question?

A QRS axis of -30 is mildly abnormal. I would need to see the tracing to render an opinion. READ MORE

  • Is there any treatment for heart attacks?

If a patient arrives soon after the heart attack has started, the most effective treatment is to take the patient quickly to the cardiac cath lab where coronary arteriography is performed. A heart attack usually involves the production of an occlusion in an artery to the heart muscle when a cholesterol plaque ruptures or erodes through, causing a blood clot to form. READ MORE

  • What lab values indicate myocardial infarction?

The most specific lab value is an enzyme called troponin-I in addition to an EKG. Another less sensitive enzyme is CPK or CK. Both are very sensitive. Troponin is more specific but can also be slightly elevated in the absence of a heart attack in times of stress to the heart such as severely elevated blood pressure or prolonged fast heart rates. It has been found to be elevated in times of renal failure. READ MORE

  • What is the normal rhythm of the heart?

It is a regular rhythm that originates from our inherent pacemaker that we are born with. That is the sinus node which is located at the upper right portion of the right atrium READ MORE

  • Can sugar cause an irregular heartbeat?

Not directly. I’m not aware of any instance of sugar loading causing a heart rhythm problem. Long term excessive carbohydrate and calories can lead to obesity and its associated risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes) eventually resulting in heart disease and possible rhythm problems READ MORE

  • How often should I get my heart checked?

How often would depend on what is found at the initial evaluation. Your symptoms would determine what is done to evaluate you initially READ MORE

  • My mother is suffering from breathlessness but the 2-d echo shows normal. Why?

I would like to know more; does she have a cough, any chest discomfort associated with the shortness of breath. Previous smoker? Does she awaken with shortness of breath during the night? Is she able to lie down on one pillow without shortness of breath? Other tests to consider might include a chest X-ray, pulmonary function tests, or possibly nuclear stress testing. READ MORE
