I have a pus boil inside my nose. What can I apply to ease the pain?
Triple antibiotic ointment (bacitracin) could certainly help. Furuncles in the nose however should not be taken lightly as they can lead to serious intracranial complications. You should seek care on an otolaryngologist if it doesn’t improve quickly or immediately if you get fevers or headaches. Sometimes it can be a sign of a resistant bacteria called MRSA especially if you work in healthcare or exposed in gyms. You may need antibiotics and/or to get the pustule drained. Hope you feel better soon. READ MORE
Can nasal sprays be addictive?
Decongestant nasal sprays like afrin or 4way are absolutely addictive if you use them more than 3 days. The nasal lining can become tachyphylactic which means it is swelling each morning expecting the nose spray and using it just prolongs the problem. He should see an otolaryngologist to help him not only get off the spray but to address the underlying reason he started it to begin with. And yes, his wife is always right. READ MORE
Why was I prescribed an antibiotic for an ear infection? Don't I need drops?
Ototopical antibiotics are usually prescribed for external ear infections or dermatological conditions. External ear infections are also known as swimmers ear and indicates a painful swelling of the ear canal skin. Acute otitis media is the classic ear infection more common in children where you get pus and fluid behind the ear drum. This is best treated with oral antibiotics. Rarely an acute otitis media can rupture an ear drum leading to drainage that should be treated with drops. So, depending on the type of ear infection, oral antibiotics, and/or drops are appropriate. Hope this helps. Eric M. Gessler, M.D. READ MORE
