Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Jamette Huffman, who serves patients in Kinston, North Carolina.
Dr. Huffman is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist diagnosing and treating reproductive health conditions that affect women of all ages. Her special interests include the treatment of pelvic floor support issues – both surgical and nonsurgical, as well as the evaluation and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome.
In her current capacity, she is in practice with UNC Women’s Health at Lenoir in Kinston, North Carolina. The facility is proud to offer expertise and patient-centered care for women of all ages and stages. The OB services provide both routine prenatal and postpartum care, while the GYN services range from routine yearly examinations to full evaluation and treatment of most gynecologic disorders.
“My philosophy of care is that the patient is a participant in their care and overall health. I believe in and stress preventive medicine. I spend time educating patients on preventive medicine such as self-breast exams. By educating our patients, some will be more compliant if they understand why we are asking them to do certain things. For example, seeing a dietician to learn what and how much they can eat – instead of just giving a handout” as stated by Dr. Huffman.
Following the completion of her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997, she went on to further her education. She completed her internship in internal medicine and her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Clemens General Hospital in 1998 and 2002, respectively.
“Even at a young age, I was very interested in biology. I am a ‘people person’ and enjoy helping people. Medicine allows me to use my love of physiology and anatomy to meet and care for others. I decided on obstetrics and gynecology because I can have a relationship with my patients on a recurring basis as in primary care. As well, I can do surgical procedures, which I love to do” expressed Dr. Huffman.
With an unwavering commitment to her speciality, she is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOBOG). The AOBOG is an organization that provides board certification to qualified DOs who specialize in the care of the female reproductive tract and children during the course of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period (obstetricians) and to qualified DOs who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the female reproductive tract (gynecologists).
Excelling in her efforts, Dr. Huffman is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Osteopathic Association.
Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a healthcare professional who specializes in female reproductive health.
Outside of work, Dr. Huffman enjoys cooking and baking. She likes to invite friends over for food and wine. She also enjoys traveling to other countries and learning about their cultures.
