An experienced gastroenterologist, Dr. Ertan is the Medical Director of the Digestive Disease Center of Excellence at the Memorial Hermann Hospital – Texas Medical Center. He has a special interest and experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, various microscopic colitides; biliary/pancreatic benign and malignant disorders, Barrett’s esophagus with dysplasia and early cancer plus these patients’ need for various advanced GI endoscopic diagnostic/therapeutic modalities.
Providing excellence in clinical care and research, Dr. Ertan’s multifaceted goals are to deliver outstanding patient care with compassion and a strong background of cutting-edge basic and clinical research in gastroenterology. He can provide expert management, up-to-date treatment and innovative solutions for his patients with all forms of digestive disorders. He also continually works to enhance patient quality of care as well as to improve quality of life for his patient population.
Alongside his clinical position at Memorial Hermann, he holds an academic position as a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas at Houston. Regarding his educational background, Dr. Ertan earned his medical degree at the University of Ankara School of Medicine in Turkey in 1963. After completing a residency in internal medicine in 1967 at the same educational venue, he moved to the United States to further his education. Once there, he completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1971.
Following completion of his fellowship, he worked at the University of Ankara Medical School until 1980. From 1980 until 1991, he was Professor Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans where he was named Chief of the Gastroenterology Section from 1984-1990 and interim Chairman of Medicine from 1989-1990. From 1990-2000, he held the position of Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Gastroenterology Section at The Methodist Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine.
Achieving fellowship status, Dr. Ertan is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF), and a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE). Additionally, he has received the “Master of Gastroenterology” title from the American College of Gastroenterology (MACG), and the “Distinguished Clinician Award” from the AGA. These titles are among the most respected in the field of gastroenterology.
Licensed to practice medicine in Texas, the doctor is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Active in various national and international gastroenterology societies, Dr. Ertan has served on the AGA’s Education Committee (1994-1997), the International Liaison Committee (1999-2003), the ACG’s International Relations Committee (Chair, International GI Training Subcommittee, 1994-1998) and the Educational Affairs Committee (Chair, 1999-2001). He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of five different medical journals.
Achieving national and international recognition as an outstanding clinical scientist, educator, researcher, and administrator in the field of gastroenterology, Dr. Ertan has published over 180 articles in peer review journals, book chapters, books, and has received numerous awards and honors. He received the Medicine Science Award of 1992 by the Turkish Science and Technology Research Assembly, and the 1996 Best Gastroenterologist Award by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. He has been named to the Top Doctors in Houston and in the U.S. since 1995, and was recognized as a Top Doctor by Find a Top Doc.He received the Life Time Excellence in Education, Research and Patient Care by the Texas University McGovern Medical School and the Life Time Achievement Award by the TSG in 2020.
