Get to know Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Rahul P. Sharma, who serves patients in Stanford, California.

Dr. Sharma is a knowledgeable interventional cardiologist and a leading expert in the field of structural heart disease. He currently holds several notable positions, including Director of Structural Interventions at Stanford Healthcare, Associate Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University.

With a wealth of experience in transcatheter valve therapy, he is well-versed in procedures such as transcatheter aortic, mitral and tricuspid replacement, percutaneous mitral valve repair, left atrial appendage occlusion, PFO/ASD/VSD closure, alcohol septal ablation and cerebral protection. He also has expertise in CT imaging for structural heart disease.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Sharma earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Monash University, and completed his medicine and cardiology training at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. In 2015, he went on to complete an advanced interventional and structural cardiology fellowship at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. After completing his fellowship, he stayed on at Cedars Sinai as Clinical Faculty, Director of the Structural Imaging Core Laboratory, and Associate Director of Interventional Cardiology Research until 2019.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), the doctor is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Coronary Angiography and Interventions, the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the American College of Cardiology. 

In his professional experience, Dr. Sharma is a clinical investigator in ongoing national multicenter research studies and clinical trials. He also serves as a national and international clinical proctor for transcatheter aortic and mitral valve implantation and percutaneous mitral valve repair.

Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter based treatment of structural heart diseases. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with one to two years of additional education and training in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease as well as congenital (present at birth) and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting.

Sharing his knowledge and expertise with other professionals in the field, Dr. Sharma is frequently invited to speak at major national and international cardiology meetings. He has also co-authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters.

An avid golfer, Dr. Sharma loves to spend his time off in Australia. He is bilingual in English and Hindi.
