Can contact lenses cause eye infections?
Yes, they can be safe when fit and used properly. And yes, they can and do cause infections. Follow your knowledgeable and experienced doctor’s recommendations. Unfortunately, sometimes those infections can cause permanent vision loss. Any signs of redness, pain, blurry vision or anything unusual call your doctor immediately. Other options to consider that are also safe and effective are glasses and laser vision correction such as LASIK if you are a candidate. All the best to you! Fred Mattioli, MD READ MORE

Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Fred Mattioli, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.
A board-certified ophthalmologist with over 20 years of vision correction experience, Dr. Mattioli tends to patients at his private practice - Mattioli Vision Professionals - in Houston, Texas. Since 2001, he has performed over 65,000 laser refractive treatments and hundreds of cataract/implant procedures, as well as cosmetic procedures such as blepharoplasty, Botox injectables, and Juvéderm filler treatments.
From 2003 to 2012, he put his years of eye care experience to work as the Houston Medical Director for a vision center managed by a national LASIK corporation. After dedicating years of service and treating thousands of patients as Houston's Medical Director, he opened his own private practice to ensure each one of his patients receives the best possible eye care Houston has to offer. Since then, Mattioli Vision Professionals has grown and been established as one of the best eye care and LASIK practices in the Houston, Woodlands, Sugar Land, River Oaks, and West University areas.
With a love for eyes and ophthalmology since the age of 12, Dr. Mattioli earned his medical degree from Texas Tech University, and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Finally, he completed his fellowship in refractive surgery at the Zaldivar Institute.
Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in ophthalmology through the American Board of Ophthalmology, an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
Remaining up to date in his field, he is an active member of the Harris County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association, the largest county and state medical associations in the nation, committed to improving health for all Texans. He and his team actively support local and international charity work through organizations such as: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Manos Que Sanan, Himalayan Cataract Project, and Casa Josefina Orphanage/La Fuente Integral.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. Ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and may perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
In addition to English, Dr. Mattioli and his team speak Spanish and Cantonese fluently. He has also personally treated several Wounded Warriors.
