Get to know Neurologist Dr. Maha Alattar, who serves the population of Virginia. Dr. Alattar graduated with her Medical Degree from the University of Tennessee-Memphis College of Medicine in 1997, giving her over two decades of experience in her field. After obtaining her Medical Degree she completed her internal medicine internship and Neurology residency with the Georgetown University Hospital Graduate Medical Education Office. Wanting to further her training she then completed her Sleep Medicine fellowship with the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Alattar is dual certified in Neurology and Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Alattar currently practices as a Neurologist with the Virginia Commonwealth University Center for Sleep Medicine. As well as a Associate Clinical Professor With the Department of Neurology in the Division of Adult Neurology with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. She is also affiliated with the Virginia Commonwealth University Ambulatory Care Center and the Mary Washington Medical Group where she holds an expertise in neurology, sleep medicine, and insomnia. Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. It deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems (and their subdivisions – the autonomic and somatic nervous systems), including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle. Neurological practice relies heavily on the field of neuroscience, which is the scientific study of the nervous system. Neurologists may also be involved in clinical research, clinical trials, and basic or translational research.
