Why are my gums swollen?
You may have a gum infection. Try rinsing with salt water twice daily for a few days to see if it clears up. You may need a professional cleaning to get rid of the irritant that caused the infection in the first place. READ MORE
How many times should I floss?
I recommend flossing at least once a day. READ MORE
Could wisdom tooth extraction cause an infection?
If you started to have pain 1-2 days after having the wisdom tooth extraction, your pain may not be due to an infection but rather due to a condition called "dry socket". You will need to see the dentist to get them to place a medication in the extraction site to help with healing. READ MORE
Does switching toothpaste matter?
Switching toothpastes is generally okay for most patients. In some cases, it may not be a good idea to change toothpastes. For instance, if you have sensitive teeth and are using a particular sensitivity toothpaste, switching toothpastes around may result in your teeth becoming more sensitive. Also in some cases, patients have been prescribed a toothpaste with a very high fluoride content, switching to a toothpaste without as much fluoride may increase risk of cavities in these patients. Do fillings need to be replaced?
Fillings can break down over time. Sometimes you can get new cavities that can start at the junction between your tooth and your filling. To clean these cavities, fillings typically may need to be replaced. However, just because a filling is a certain age does not necessarily mean it needs to be taken out and replaced. Your dentist will be able to assess your existing fillings with the help of X-rays to determine if your fillings need to be replaced. READ MORE
My tooth in the back is half broken, what should I do?
I would recommend seeing a dentist as soon as possible especially since the tooth is causing pain. In the best case scenario, you may need a filling to repair the broken portion of the tooth. Depending on how badly the tooth is broken, you may also need a root canal and a cap (crown) to properly restore the tooth. In some cases, the fracture may extend to the root surface and the tooth may not be salvageable and will need to be extracted. READ MORE
What are the most visible signs and symptoms of a gum disease?
The most visible sign of gum disease in children and adults is bleeding gums. Occasionally gums may bleed because of trauma (e.g. cutting the gums when flossing too hard), however, most of the time, gums that bleed are a sign of inflammation or gingivitis. Incidentally patients that smoke have constricted blood vessels in their mouths and may not have this sign of inflammation present despite the presence of gum disease. Swelling and pain could also be symptoms of gum disease. In any case, it is a very good idea to make sure an oral health provider assesses the mouth to help with diagnosis and treatment. READ MORE
What is a dry socket?
A dry socket is a painful condition that occurs after an extraction when the blood clot at the site of the extraction has been dislodged. The condition is best treated by getting a dentist to place a medicated dressing on the site and allowing the area to heal on its own. Dry sockets can be prevented by being very careful after extractions to not disturb the clotting blood. We tell our patients not to smoke, drink through or straw or do anything else that can create "suction" in the mouth that could pull the blood clot out. READ MORE
Skin is shedding on the inside of my mouth (my cheeks). Is this normal?
In most cases this could be normal tissue sloughing that occurs. If you recently changed a toothpaste or your diet and are noticing this more often now, that may be the culprit. Best to get a dental professional to assess to be sure that it is not anything else. READ MORE
