Get to know Anesthesiologist and Pain Management Specialist Dr. George M. Baylor, who serves patients in Virginia.

Dr. Baylor is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management physician whose approach to medicine focuses on the patients, not the disease. As a cornerstone of the Roanoke Valley region’s pain medicine care since 2004, he brings a wealth of experience with advanced therapies to Blue Ridge Pain Management Associates with offices in Roanoke, Salem, and Christiansburg, Virginia.

The highly skilled team of anesthesiologists, pain medicine physicians, and certified physician assistants at Blue Ridge Pain Management Associates is dedicated to relieving human suffering. The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began in 1991 when he earned his medical degree fromThe Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, which is the medical school at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He completed his internship at the Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, West Virginia, after which he went on to complete his residency in anesthesiology and his fellowship in pain medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While pursuing his fellowship, he concurrently completed a fellowship in health care management at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Committed to patient-centered care, Dr. Baylor is in constant pursuit of knowledge to expand his offerings. He is dedicated to teaching and has served as an Associate Professor of Anesthesia Pain Management at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia since 2007. Additionally, he has proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserve for 23 years and retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 2013.

A member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the doctor is board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology, whose mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. Moreover, he is board-certified in pain medicine by the American Board of Pain Medicine, whose mission is to improve the quality of pain medicine. Both boards are a part of the 24 medical specialty boards that constitute the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.
