Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Abdirizak Nuno, who serves patients throughout the State of Minnesota.

A Minnesota-based psychiatrist, Dr. Nuno is affiliated with Regions Hospital, serving patients at the Diamond Lake Clinic in Minneapolis, and the Shifa Metro Clinic in Bloomington.

“I am fascinated with how the human brain influences behavior and the role of neurochemistry in psychiatric disorders. I chose psychiatry because it provides a holistic understanding of the physical, mental, social and behavioral aspects of mental illness. I enjoy working with and learning from patients from diverse cultural backgrounds and my goal is to always provide culturally appropriate and respectful care” expressed Dr. Nuno.

The doctor’s interests are varied and include a wide spectrum of disorders, such as major depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, substance use, ADHD and PTSD. He explores the biological, psychological and social components of mental illness and utilizes tools and interventions to evaluate and treat his patients, including diagnostic laboratory tests, prescribed medications and coping strategies.

In addition to medication management, he provides his patients with psychoeducation and supportive care. While he likes to collaborate with families and encourage them to actively engage in their loved one’s treatment, his approach is also patient-centered care and he provides them with the autonomy to make informed choices.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Nuno graduated with his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Health Sciences, St. Kitts. He then went on to complete his residency in psychiatry at the Hennepin County Medical Center.

As a testament to his success, he is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Nuno is an active member of the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Medical Association.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

On a more personal note, he and his family live in the fun-filled city of Bloomington, Minnesota. In his free time, he enjoys being with family and friends, playing soccer and basketball, reading and traveling.
