Mr. Kevin Goeta-Kreisler MD's Expert Contributions
Can chemotherapy cause depression?
It definitely can cause depression. First, she should see about a support group through the oncologist office. Check www.DBSAlliance.org for other free groups in your area and information on depression. Just because you have a good reason "to be depressed" does not mean don't treat it. If you get run over by a car, G-d forbid, and your leg is broken, you don't say, "Sure it's broken, it got run over by the car," and don't fix it. For sure, you fix it. Medication can be helpful in 60-70 percent of cases. If all else fails or it gets so bad she can't eat or take meds, ECT is still the best, most effective, and quickest way to get out of the severe depression (electroconvulsive therapy). From our website: http://www.alephcenter.com/ectinformation.html The top Youtube video is 10 minutes. I don't suggest you start with this treatment as meds and sometimes just counseling can help, but if things get worse, this really works in 90-95 percent of cases. Don't use alcohol, medical marijuana, or other drugs. Can just make things worse. Good luck and see a psychiatrist if you need more assistance, or a psych nurse practitioner. Why is my 27 year old daughter only reading depressing things?
You should ask her if she would like to discuss it. At 27, she is a peer, not "your little girl." You can say that, given all the press about depression and suicide, you wanted to say that there is help if that is a concern of hers. Suicide is a symptom of depression, which is treatable. You can say you are concerned and if there is anything you can do for her, you are there. READ MORE
Do depression medicines hamper sleep patterns?
They all affect sleep. Depression also affects sleep, so treating it will affect it. Tired earlier? If you are sleeping 7-8 hours a night, great, if much more than 8, too much. You can look up your particular medication and maybe find how it affects sleep. Uptodate has a lot of them. If you can't get on the site, ask your provider. You can always do a sleep study to find out the amount and quality of your sleep. You sleep all night with wires on your head and elsewhere. Good luck and discuss with your provider. DRGK READ MORE
Can bipolar disorder affect anyone at any age?
You should check www.DBSAlliance.org. They have lots of information. There are no good tests for psychiatric illness. They are based on symptoms and, to some extent, response to treatment. Good luck, DRGK READ MORE
my Girl she's into sex extremely
Make sure she is on birth control. There is not anything safe that you can decrease desire. I would say it could be a symptom of something else she is not getting enough of and the problem is that the sex won't fill the void either. It will just make things harder to patch up later. A few sessions with a therapist may help. Ask her to commit to 3 times and pray for the light to come on. It will take a lot of work to fill that void. Sex Anonymous is a good free group therapy. There are different types of meds, SSRIs, fluvoxamine, and all are common. READ MORE
When is it the right time to see a doctor for depression?
The website www.DBSAlliance.org has a lot of good information. Talk to your PCP. Ask to check thyroid function, B12, vitamin D, and anything else pertinent. You want to review the criteria for hypomania or mania because, if she has ever had those symptoms, adding an antidepressant can make that worse....can cause mania in someone who has the potential. You can also seek out a therapist. Talking therapy can be just as effective as medication. You can also look at website https://www.psychiatry.org/. Good luck. READ MORE
Can high TSH levels cause depression?
Yes, high TSH means the brain wants more thyroid. It can be for a number of reasons. To know more, they should check T4 and Free T3. If either are low, taking that replacement can help a depression, among other things (hypothyroid). Good luck. It's pretty common and easy to treat. If those others are nl, it may be more like Hashimoto's disease...not as bad as it sounds, same treatment. READ MORE
Does a schizophrenia patient also suffer from memory loss?
Could be either or both. They should check with their prescriber. DRGK READ MORE
My son is affected by his older brother's behavior. How should I talk to him?
Are you seeing a therapist? If you can see a family counselor, that is likely the best. You may ask your older son's doctor for a referral. It is a lot of work either way, but can be very rewarding. Good luck, DRGK READ MORE
Is excessive sleeping a side effect of anti depressants?
Yes, if you look up the side effects, you will likely see any antidepressant has the side effect of sedation or activation depending on the person. Some, like mirtazapine, will cause less sedation at higher doses and more sedation at lower doses. Is she taking it at night? Sleepy 24 hours a day? Hope that helps. Talk to the doc who wrote for it. Can depression cause physical symptoms?
Weight loss is a common symptom of depression. You want to have your regular primary care provider do a thorough evaluation to make sure it is not something more 'medical.' If not, depression can certainly do it. DR. GK READ MORE

Is binge eating a sign of depression?
This is usually a symptom of other illnesses like depression. She should see a child psychiatrist or therapist ASAP. It often times responds to attention sooner than later and should include other family members as well. Good luck. READ MORE
Is there any medication to cure OCD?
The first medication is an older type of antidepressant Clomipramine, fairly effective with side effects, than most of the SSRIs like Prozac and then some of the newer antipsychotics as add-on if the first don't work alone. It is best to combine with a therapist who works with patients that have OCD. READ MORE
Is the need for having sex everyday abnormal?
32 for a woman is the height of libido. Is there some other need it is filling? Are you feeling loved by your husband otherwise? Does he take the time to be with you when not physically? I am guessing not as that is also 'normal' for men. A good marriage counselor that is not either of your private therapists if you have one can cut to the chase pretty quickly. Men and women were not meant to live together easily. DR GK READ MORE
Is bipolar disorder hereditary?
It does occur more in families. Make sure you get your sleep each night. No drugs and little alcohol. Exercise regularly. Learn meditation and practice daily. Omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil may help. Nordic Naturals liquid 2 times a day, teaspoon. www.Dbsalliance.org. See a psychiatrist if you are not sleeping or can't turn your mind off. Dr GK READ MORE
