What is cerclage?
A cerclage is a suture that is placed circumferentially around the cervix in the hopes of strengthening a cervix that has been proven to be weak in the past (multiple previous pregnancy losse). It is meant to be a physical method to keep the cervix long and closed. When done in a preventative manner in the right context, they are quite successful. READ MORE
How can I differentiate between implantation bleeding and periods?
Implantation bleeding often happens between 5-8 weeks of pregnancy. By that time, you have already "missed" a period and many women are aware that they are pregnant. The bleeding would also be significantly different than that of a regular period. To be safe, any abnormal bleeding should be evaluated by a woman's health specialist. READ MORE
Vaginal delivery after cesarean
A trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) is certainly still attempted now as it has been in the past. Many factors play into why one may or may not attempt a trial of labor after a prior cesarean. These include but are not limited to: the type of incision she had on her uterus, the reason for her prior cesarean, how much time elapsed between her last surgery and her current pregnancy and the capability of the delivering hospital to perform an emergency cesarean should one be needed. There are other factors involved in the decision making so ultimately, a discussion between her and her provider is necessary to determine whether she is a good candidate for TOLAC or not. Many women still attempt TOLACs and with great success so long as they are good candidates in a safe medical setting. READ MORE
Why am I bleeding after my pap?
This is a very common occurrence and often is not the result of anything harmful. If your pap smear results are normal then you do not need to worry about cervical cancer or pre-cursors to it. There may be an infection of the cervix, a benign polyp or simply increased sensitivity of the cervix to trauma. The more important question is why you are getting a pap smear every 6 months. We have generally moved away from such frequent screening in recent years. I would bring up your concerns to your provider. READ MORE
What's the earliest I can get a mammogram?
Hi, Most women should start screening mammograms at age 40 or 10 years younger than the youngest affected family member. With your specific family history however, it is possible that your family may carry a gene mutation which increases your risk of developing cancer beyond that of the general population. I would recommend genetic testing for either your mother or grandmother and then specific screening recommendations for you based on their results. If your primary care physician or Ob/Gyn is not familiar with these tests or guidelines then feel free to come in for a consultation and I will gladly assist you. READ MORE
