Get to know Hand and Upper Extremity Surgeon Dr. Smiresh Shah, who serves patients in Concord, North Carolina.

Dr. Shah is a fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon. He treats patients of all ages at Piedmont Orthopedic Specialists & Piedmont Orthopedic Specialists Poplar Tent – both located in Concord, North Carolina.

A part of Atrium Health, Piedmont Orthopedic Specialists provides specialized musculoskeletal care for the foot and ankle, hand and wrist, and shoulder and elbow, as well as joint replacements, orthopedic trauma, and sports medicine.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Shah graduated with his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine in 2007. He then went on to perform his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Illinois Hospital in 2012, followed by his fellowship in hand surgery at New England Baptist Hospital in 2013.

Board-certified in orthopedic surgery and surgery of the hand, Dr. Shah is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Staying up to date in his field, Dr. Shah is an active member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Hand and upper extremity care is a subspecialty of orthopedics that covers conditions in areas of the body including the hands, wrists, elbows, fingers and arms. Also known as hand and upper extremity surgeons, hand surgeons reduce or get rid of pain and restore hand movement and function. Healthcare facilities and hospitals typically have a team of hand surgeons and therapists who specialize in preventing, diagnosing, and treating injuries.
