Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Peter A. Gottlieb, who serves patients in Aurora, Colorado.

A leading endocrinologist, Dr. Gottlieb joined the faculty of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, Adult Clinic in Aurora, Colorado in 1994. 

His laboratory projects are designed to advance basic knowledge of the immune response to autoantigens in type 1 diabetes with the goal of designing immunotherapies for prediabetes and new onset type 1 subjects. Towards this end, Dr. Gottlieb seeks better understanding of the relationship of autoreactive vs. T regulatory cells, innate immunity, and microbiome in human diabetes. His aims are to better understand the pathogenesis and natural history of type 1 diabetes as well as to design clinical prevention trials based on rigorous immunological readouts of the disease process. 

The PI for the Colorado Center of the NIH funded Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet effort, Dr. Gottlieb’s research provides ‘bench to bedside’ research of the highest caliber. His work has resulted in over 130 peer-reviewed publications.

Alongside his clinical role, he serves as a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He can also be found on staff at the University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Gottlieb graduated with his medical degree from the  University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey in 1984. He then went on to serve his residency in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1987, and his fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism at the same educational venue in 1990.

Attributing his success to his hard work and working well with his colleagues, the doctor is board-certified in endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Remaining at the forefront of his challenging specialty, Dr. Gottlieb is an active member of the American Federation for Medical Research, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Diabetes Association, the American College of Physicians, the Immunology of Diabetes Society, the European Association for Study of Diabetes, the American Medical Student Association (Task Force on Aging, National Co-Chairperson), and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Gottlieb enjoys hiking and listening to music. His favorite professional publications include the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Diabetes.
