I have a stabbing pain in my lower abdomen. Should I be worried?
Stabbing pain in the abdomen is not necessarily a cause for alarm. Many very simple explanations can be found. The fact that a painkiller helped is encouraging. But you should certainly have a healthcare professional fully examine you to evaluate the source of the pain. READ MORE
I have pain where my groin is. What could it be?
The overwhelming majority of groin pain is muscular in nature and usually resolves with time/ice/heat/NSAIDS or Tylenol. Other possibilities, however, include a small hernia or, much less commonly, it is related to entrapment or irritation of the ilioinguinal nerve. The first step is to visit with your physician for a full examination. READ MORE
I am suffering from extreme pain in my knees that is due to low vitamin D levels. What can I do?
Of course the first step is to get your vitamin D levels back in the normal range. Pain relief however will be slow to follow. Simple measures generally are best in the meantime. Including NSAIDs if your physician feels it would be safe for you personally. Application of ice/ heat, TENS unit application, and topical agents as well like diclofenac gel or lidocaine creams can also add additional comfort READ MORE
For a sprain what is more advisable a hot pack or a cold pack?
In most cases, ice is the best option for a new injury. Mostly because it numbs the area a bit, but it has the added benefit of reducing swelling in the region that makes the sprain even more uncomfortable. After a week or so, alternating ice with heat seems to provide the best relief. READ MORE
Is my mother's leg pain sciatica or something else?
“Sciatica” is a very broad term that just means nerve pain in the leg. There are a number of causes for this type of pain that can come from spinal nerve compression, muscle spasms, or joint degeneration in the hips or pelvic bones. She will likely need to be examined to narrow down the source of the problem, and may need a CT scan or MRI. READ MORE
Can a c-section leave you with a constant low back pain?
We see many patients with similar questions about back pain after epidurals for delivery. The fact is that there are so many causes for chronic back pain that it may be impossible to state with certainty that the epidural itself caused the problem. The physiologic changes to spinal posture and the process of just carrying a developing baby for 9 months can leave many women with some chronic back discomfort even without having had an epidural at all. The real question at this point is what can be done to help reduce or eliminate the back pain in your particular case. And for the answer I would recommend a visit with a qualified physician for evaluation. READ MORE

Dr. Thomas Heil MD's reviews
Write ReviewPatient Experience with Dr. Heil
Outstanding experience. I was referred by another pain doctor in the area to have a spinal cord stimulator surgery by Dr Heil because I still had so much nerve pain in my back and legs 2 years after back surgery was already done . I was so impressed that he didn't just go ahead with the surgery because another specialist asked him to do it. He really listened to my symptoms and he wasn't convinced that a stimulator surgery would help me enough to recommend the surgery. He made some additional recommendations for treatment and I am doing so much better now, without having surgery! I highly recommend seeing Dr Heil to evaluate your pain
