Get to know Internist Dr. Marisel Cancel-Mendez, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Cancel-Mendez is a board-certified internist who, in addition to her affiliation with St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital, is serving patients at Wellmed At Northern Hills in San Antonio, Texas.

After earning her undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico in 1992, Dr. Cancel-Mendez went on to obtain her medical degree from the Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamón Pueblo, Puerto Rico in 1996. She served her internship and residency at Hospital de Veteranos (VA Caribbean Healthcare System) in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 1996 until 1999.

Attributing her success to her determination, she maintains professional memberships with the American College of Physicians and the Bexar County Medical Society. She is also board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Internal medicine or general medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being. 

When she is not working, Dr. Cancel-Mendez enjoys reading and participating in outdoor activities. Her favorite professional publication is the Journal of the American Medical Association.
