Get to know Trauma Surgeon, Dr. Nikolas S. Kappy, who serves patients in Trenton, New Jersey.

Dr. Kappy stands as a highly skilled and compassionate surgeon with expertise in general surgery, surgical critical care, and trauma. As a board-certified general surgeon and a fellowship-trained trauma and critical care surgeon, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his practice.

Back in the early days of his academic career, he obtained his medical degree from Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School in Newark, where he laid the foundation for his distinguished medical career. He then pursued his residency in Surgery at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden. During this time, he not only honed his surgical skills but also distinguished himself as a research fellow in the Department of Surgery and served as the administrative chief resident for general surgery.

To further refine his expertise, Dr. Kappy completed a fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at UC San Diego Medical Center-Hill Crest in San Diego, CA. This specialized training equipped him with the skills necessary to handle complex cases in trauma and critical care.

Dedicated to clinical excellence, the doctor attained board certification in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery.

Dr. Kappy’s commitment to advancing medical knowledge is evident through his contributions to research. His dedication to both local and international communities is notable, as he has volunteered to provide free ambulatory medical care to the inner-city population of Newark, NJ. Additionally, he has offered surgical care and mobile medical support to villages and orphanages in Ghana, showcasing his commitment to global health.

An advocate for public education in trauma-related issues, he actively engages in initiatives such as the nationwide Stop The Bleed campaign. Through these efforts, he strives to raise awareness and empower individuals with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting. Trauma surgeons generally complete residency training in general surgery and often fellowship training in trauma or surgical critical care. Also called critical care and acute care surgeons, trauma surgeons specialize in performing emergency surgeries on people who have had a critical injury or illness.
