Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. Emil J. Fernando, who serves patients in Pennsylvania.

A fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, Dr. Fernando is pleased to provide superior breast surgical care to the greater Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania/Eastern Ohio regions. He is an attending at Allegheny General Hospital & Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion.

An expert in breast cancer and also benign (non-cancerous) breast disease, he performs the full spectrum of breast surgery procedures and operations. He works with a multi-disciplinary team of radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, and numerous support staff to ensure that all of his patients are receiving comprehensive care and have access to the latest advancements in treatment.

The AHN Division of Breast Surgery offers patients access to the complete spectrum of advanced treatments for breast disease, including immunotherapy, targeted drug therapies, and image-guided radiation therapy, along with cutting-edge diagnostic techniques and surgical options to meet every patient’s needs.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Fernando received his medical degree from the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He then went on to complete his residency in general surgery at the world-famous Cleveland Clinic, followed by his fellowship training in breast surgical oncology at the prestigious Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Conducting research in breast cancer and published in the field, Dr. Fernando is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

So that his patients do not need to travel far to receive the best quality of care, Dr. Fernando brings his world-class training and expertise directly to the Pittsburgh community. He makes his patients his number one priority, and he promises to give the highest level of compassion and empathy to his patients in addition to his advanced surgical skills.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is also an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Oncology.

Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.

Outside of work, Dr. Fernando enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is fond of film and theater, and is an avid music enthusiast. He also has a strong interest in history, particularly the American Civil War and the RMS Titanic.
