Get to know Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Matthew J. Sousa, who serves patients throughout the State of Kentucky.
Treating adults, Dr. Sousa is a triple board-certified interventional cardiologist at Norton Heart & Vascular Institute.
“The most important thing is to not treat a person like a lab test or a paragraph on a test. The most important thing is realizing that everyone’s a human and that sometimes it’s not the chest x-ray or the EKG that someone needs. It’s someone to talk to and realize what’s going on with their specific situation and work that out with them individually when I’m not saving lives” he stated.
Norton Heart & Vascular Institute provides diagnostic, medical, interventional and surgical care at Norton Healthcare’s accredited chest pain and stroke centers, as well as numerous outpatient offices. It has received national accreditation for its Chest Pain Center and Atrial Fibrillation Program as well as for noninvasive vascular cardiology, minimally invasive cardiology, and cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Back in 2014, Dr. Sousa graduated with his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital in 2017 and 2021, respectively. He further performed an additional fellowship in interventional cardiology at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 2022.
Successful in his field, he is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
The doctor’s research interests are in the role of coronary calcifications on non-gated CT on cardiovascular outcomes in patients who are having intermediate risk noncardiac surgical procedures.
Interventional cardiology is a non-surgical option which uses a small, flexible tube called a catheter to repair damaged or weakened vessels, narrowed arteries, or other affected parts of the heart structure. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with one to two years of additional education and training in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease as well as congenital (present at birth) and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting.
Growing up in Massachusetts, Dr. Sousa moved to Ohio and has spent the last decade in Kentucky, where he fell in love with nature. He and his wife love spending every minute outside when they can.
