Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Melissa Ann Crawley, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Crawley, a well-versed hematologist-oncologist, is passionate about offering high quality care to patients with cancer and blood disorders. Since 2018, she has been in practice with Texas Oncology-San Antonio Medical Center. 

The comprehensive cancer center is staffed with knowledgeable and supportive teams to tend to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other vital services. Diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, and a pharmacy are close-at-hand to make the process more manageable.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after she earned her medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago, Illinois. She then went on to perform her internship and residency in internal medicine at The University of Arizona. This was followed by a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee, where she served as Chief Fellow for Quality Improvement.

Licensed to practice medicine in Texas, Dr. Crawley is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

To advance her professional efforts, she remains a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

In her spare time, Dr. Crawley enjoys reading, cooking, and developing original recipes. She also enjoys instrumental music such as flute, acoustic guitar, and piano, as well as spending time with her husband and their pets.
