Get to know Pain Management Specialist Dr. Justin F. Averna, who serves patients in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A top specialist in the field of pain management, Dr. Averna is a part of the team of professionals at New Mexico Orthopaedics.

New Mexico Orthopaedic Associates  has been serving patients in the Albuquerque-Metro area for over 35 years. Orthopaedic, sports medicine, and spine care physicians work together in New Mexico’s only medical practice that offers diagnosis, treatment, surgery, and rehabilitation all within one practice. Their mission is to provide exceptional care for every patient, every day.

Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Spine Intervention Society, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and the North American Neuromodulation Society. In addition, he is affiliated with Presbyterian Hospital and New Mexico Surgery Center Orthopaedics.

Graduating with summa cum laude honors from the University of New Mexico, Dr. Averna went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and graduated with Sigma Sigma Phi Osteopathic Honors from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012. He then completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Temple University Hospital / Moss Rehabilitation in Philadelphia, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. During his training, he was awarded the Margo and Daniel Polett Humanitarian Resident Award & the Resident of the Year Award; he is the only resident to win both awards in the program to date. Finally, he completed his fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

He is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and subspecialty board-certified in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.

Priding himself on staying up to date in his field, he publishes regularly in medical journals and has contributed to many textbook chapters in the fields of rehabilitation and pain medicine. 

Pain management is a branch of medicine employing an interdisciplinary approach for easing the suffering and improving the quality of life of those living with chronic pain. A pain management specialist is a doctor who specializes in pain medicine, focusing on the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of pain.

In 2016, Dr. Averna returned to New Mexico with his beautiful wife to raise their three young children in the Land of Enchantment. He is forever grateful to be back to serve the people of New Mexico. He loves listening to music, being outdoors, spending time with his family, and geeking out on automobiles.
