    That's a great question. Congratulations for your transplant! I would discuss this question with your treatment team, each center usually has their own practices. In general, therapy is performed in a supervised cardiac rehab unit at your local hospital or nearby for a pre-specified duration, depending on your programs practices, this can defer from each center.     Thanks for the question! Usually there are some associated symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, light headedness, swelling, fatigue. As you can imagine, those symptoms can be from a variety of ailments. Get to know Transplant Cardiologist Dr. Rohan M. Goswami, who serves patients in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Goswami is an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist in the Transplant Center at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville in Florida, which is a comprehensive medical center and one of three Mayo campuses along with Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona, and Rochester, Minnesota. 

A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Goswami received his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles. He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Stamford Hospital/Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in Stamford, Connecticut, where he was Chief Resident. 

During his time at Stamford Hospital, he developed and implemented a resident education system to help improve resident knowledge, patient care, and patient outcomes. He then completed a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee, followed by a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science in Jacksonville.

With respect to the doctor’s noteworthy accomplishments, he is board-certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Passionate about merging the world between technology and healthcare in order to prevent disease and educate patients, Dr. Goswami is focused on innovation and clinical research. He is the recipient of several awards and honors throughout his career, including Golden Feather Award for Excellence by the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2007, Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award by the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2013, Cardiovascular Cases Award by the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation in 2016, and SAFMR/SSCI Trainee Research Award by the Southern American Federation for Medical Research in 2017, among other achievements. 

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Heart failure and transplant cardiology represents advanced training in cardiovascular disease and focuses on the management of advanced or complicated heart failure beyond the scope of what is usually provided by general internists and general cardiologists. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).

On a more personal note, Dr. Goswami is an avid mountaineer. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with his father in 2016.
