Dr. Tong is a fellowship-trained, double board-certified interventional pain management specialist abd anesthesiologist. He offers innovative, advanced care to patients at Tricity Pain Associates in San Antonio, Texas.

Considered an expert in the treatment of neck and lower back pain, he utilizes cutting-edge treatments, including spinal injections, BOTOX®, spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation, and intrathecal therapies, to manage pain.

Having always believed that everyone should play a part in making the world a better place, Dr. Tong’s passion for science and humanity has led him to pursue a profession in medicine. After working at the Salk Institute in San Diego, he realized the future of medicine is bright and the role of physicians is to bridge the gap between the latest innovations and patient care. His goal as an interventional pain management specialist is to truly understand each patient’s individual circumstance in order to increase their quality of life and functional capacity.

In the early days of his academic career, he attended Dartmouth Medical School, one of the top Ivy League medical schools in the country. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and continued his training with a fellowship in pain medicine at the same educational venue. 

While at Harvard, he worked with world-renowned specialists in the field of headaches, pelvic pain, cancer pain, and spine pain. Before long, he became board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management by the American Board of Anesthesiology, whose mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology.

A nationally recognized expert in anesthesiology and pain medicine, Dr. Tong has published many journal articles and textbook chapters related to common pain diagnoses. 

Interventional pain management or interventional pain medicine is a medical subspecialty which treats pain with invasive interventions such as facet joint injections, nerve blocks (interrupting the flow of pain signals along specific nervous system pathways), neuroaugmentation (including spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation), vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, nucleoplasty, endoscopic discectomy, and implantable drug delivery systems. A specialist who is experienced in this field is known as an interventional pain management specialist.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.
