  • What is the difference between a therapist and psychologist?

Great question! In general, a therapist can include any of the following credentials psychiatrists Medical doctor or M.D., psychologists Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology Ph.D. or Doctor of Psychology Psy.D., licensed clinical social workers LCSW, marriage and family therapists LMFT, licensed psychiatric nurse practitioners LNP, and licensed mental health counselors LMHC. Of the above group of therapists or mental health providers, psychiatrists and psychologists are doctors while the remaining professionals are only required to have a Masters degree still, some proceed to get a doctorate in their field but they dont need it to be therapists. While all can be called therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists typically dont introduce themselves as therapists, they say Im a psychiatrist or Im a psychologist. If a mental health provider introduces themselves as a therapist, they are likely one of the other professionals listed above. You can always ask them what their credentials are that would be a totally appropriate question to ask. So in short, a psychiatrist and a psychologist need a doctorate before they get licensed to practice therapy, while all the others only need a Masers degree to get licensed to practice therapy. If you need medication, only psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners can prescribe medication. There is such a thing as a prescribing psychologist but they are very rare and not in every state because not every state has approved the prescribing psychologists law. Inquisitive since childhood, I remain a lifelong student, continuously drawn to investigate the ultimate unknown: the human mind. You deserve to feel in charge of your own life. I believe you are more resilient than you sometimes feel” as stated by Dr. Selkirk.
