Get to know Dermatopathologist Dr. Seema Apichai, who serves patients in Illinois.

Dr. Apichai is a highly-trained dermatopathologist who has been serving as an in-house physician at Beaird Dermatology since 2020. She brings to the practice her vast knowledge and expertise in dermatopathology to provide accurate diagnoses, which are crucial in determining the best course of treatment for patients.

She uses a combination of clinical history, lesion description, clinical pictures, and histology to develop precise and informative pathology reports for each case. She firmly believes in a collaborative approach to patient care and works closely with the practice’s clinicians to discuss complex cases and ensure a proper diagnosis.

Academically, Dr. Apichai received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned her medical degree through the University’s College of Medicine’s Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions in 2005. She completed her residency in anatomic & clinical pathology at the University of Illinois Medical Center and a fellowship in dermatopathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists (FCAP), the doctor is board-certified in anatomic & clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of the ABPath is to promote the health of the public and advance the practice and science of pathology by establishing voluntary certification standards and assessing the qualifications of those seeking to practice the specialty of pathology.

Remaining up to date in her field, she is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology, the Chicago Dermatological Society, the Chicago Medical Society, and the American Society of Dermatopathology. She has coauthored and collaborated on several publications and medical presentations and remains up to date with the latest findings and advancements in dermatopathology.

Dermatopathology is a joint subspecialty of dermatology and pathology or surgical pathology that focuses on the study of cutaneous diseases at a microscopic and molecular level. It also encompasses analyses of the potential causes of skin diseases at a basic level. A dermatopathologist is a highly trained physician who specializes in diagnosing disorders of the skin under a microscope.
