How do I know if I have sciatica or hip pain?
Sciatica is a term loosely used to describe buttock and leg pain but is describing a nerve bundle that incorporates nerves from the spinal levels Lumbar (L) 4 through Sacral (S) 3. Meaning the nerves that exit the spine at the 4th, 5th lumbar vertebra and the first 3 foramen in the sacrum at bundle together to make up the sciatic nerve which goes all the way down to the foot. The distribution of where the pain goes determines what nerve levels are involved. Hip pain rarely has pain radiate down the leg passed the knee. Low back, buttock and leg pain can all be caused by the same thing, that is why it is important that in depth orthopedic and functional examinations are done to determine the origin of the pain. Sciatic nerve tension is worse with a straight leg and eased by bending the knee, if pain is from the hip joint, bending the knee will not change pain. If it is muscular, bending the knee may increase anterior hip pain due to pull on the quadriceps muscle. READ MORE
What exercises can I do with patellar tendonitis?
Patellar tendinitis is due to to much tension and strain being placed on the tendon overtime. It's called an overuse injury, meaning it is over activating when it shouldn't be due to hyperactive and shortened quadriceps muscles that give rise to the patella tendinitis. Stretching your quadriceps in dynamic movements not static holds and strengthening your hamstring is recommended. READ MORE
What muscles are weak in rounded shoulders?
This is a postural dysfunction with imbalances in the muscles with hyperactive and weak muscles in certain areas based on the posture. Rounded shoulders is due to a few factors, one is tight pectoral muscles that originate at the sternum and insert on the outer portion of the humerus(upper arm bone). Upper cervical muscles in a group called the suboccipitals also shorten and tighten and you have increased Tension headaches. When shortened due to poor forward flexed posture And your head out in front of your neck and shoulders, over time they remain shortened and tight and they restrict your movement. Another is weakened neck flexor muscles and mid to lower trap, rhomboids which allow your scapula(shoulder blade) to protract out and come forward along with chin jetting. It's referred to as upper cross syndrome and explains that antagonist muscles are imbalanced with one being to tight and the opposite being weak. Fixing the imbalance by lengthening the shortened muscles and strengthening the weak muscles is standard care of treatment. This is a regional problem, not one muscle or one group of muscles. It's an intricate system where all parts must be addressed. READ MORE
