Chris Kottenstette, PA-C, CPE, is a nationally recognized leader in pain medicine with a career spanning over three decades in emergency medical services, hospital administration, spine surgery, regenerative medicine, and advanced pain management. His professional journey began as an athletic trainer in high school and college, where he discovered a passion for emergency medicine and advanced to become a paramedic. After 18 years in EMS, he transitioned to a leadership role at Poudre Valley Hospital Ambulance Service, where his contributions helped the hospital earn the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. He later served on the National Board of Examiners for the award, evaluating organizations nationwide. Chris earned his Physician Assistant certification in 1999 through the University of Utah PA Program, where he trained alongside national leaders in pain medicine. Since then, he has become a respected consultant for pharmaceutical and medical device companies and is frequently sought out as a lecturer at national conferences on pain management. He is the founder and current president of the PAs in Pain Medicine Special Interest Group of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and a founding board member of the Pain Management Academy of Advanced Practice Providers (PM-AAPP), a national organization dedicated to supporting APPs treating pain across all settings. In addition to his expertise in pain management, Chris spent a decade focusing on spine surgery, regenerative medicine, and osteoporosis management. He remains deeply involved in clinical education, teaching at national pain medicine conferences and contributing as a legal expert reviewer. Known for his dedication to lifelong learning, Chris continually advances his clinical knowledge to improve patient outcomes and support the next generation of practitioners. Outside of medicine, Chris is passionate about music, with a personal collection of over 4,000 CDs and a love for surround-sound listening experiences. He enjoys traveling, attending concerts, and spending time with his wife, Renee, along with their children and grandchildren.
