Get to know Congestive Heart Failure Hospitalist Dr. Stephen Bruening, who serves patients in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Bruening is a congestive heart failure hospitalist at UPMC Harrisburg, a 409-bed urban hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

UPMC Harrisburg is a part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center system. The hospital serves as the hub for the UPMC network, providing advanced care to the residents throughout south central Pennsylvania. Its mission is to serve the community by providing outstanding patient care and to shape tomorrow’s health system through clinical and technological innovation, research, and education.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Bruening graduated with his high school diploma from Trinity High School, Camp Hill in 2009. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in 2013, and his Master’s degree in BioMedical Science with a concentration in Forensic Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2015.

Furthering his education, he graduated with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2018, after which he performed his residency in internal medicine at UPMC Harrisburg in 2021.

That same year, Dr. Bruening attained board certification in internal medicine through the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM). The AOBIM is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in adults.

Holding certifications, he is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association.

In addition, he is an active member of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association.

Hospital medicine is a medical specialty that exists in some countries as a branch of family medicine or internal medicine, dealing with the care of acutely ill hospitalized patients. A hospitalist is a physician who cares for inpatients, meaning they only work inside a hospital.

For congestive heart failure, doctors usually treat heart failure with a combination of medications.
