Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Gursant S. Atwal, who serves patients in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Atwal is a neurosurgeon practicing in the Department of Neurosurgery at UI Health Outpatient Care Center in Chicago, Illinois. His specialization lies in the treatment of disorders involving the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord, encompassing conditions such as stroke, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), cavernomas, vertebrobasilar disease, and carotid artery disease.

As a valuable member of the Neurovascular Team, Dr. Atwal employs a multidisciplinary approach to devise optimal solutions for some of the most complex neurovascular problems, ensuring patient-centric care tailored to their unique conditions. Collaborating with the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, he also focuses on utilizing minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for treating skull base tumors.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Atwal holds the position of Assistant Professor of Neuroendovascular/Neurovascular in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.

His acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his Medical Degree from Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2009. Dr. Atwal furthered his training with an internship, residency, and fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo, followed by an additional fellowship in cerebrovascular/skull base at Barrow Neurological Institute.

Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Atwal is board certified in RFP in CNS endovascular surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Its broad aim is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health.

The doctor’s research interests include cerebrovascular physiology, clinical outcomes in vascular diseases, and methodologies to improve neurosurgical training. 

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, certain types of birth defects, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
