Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Marcus Anthony Urey, who serves patients in La Jolla, California.

A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Urey is in practice at the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center at UC San Diego Health. Specializing in advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory devices and heart transplantation. He has a particular interest and expertise in managing end-stage congenital heart disease and cardiac amyloidosis. He works closely with colleagues from different subspecialties in efforts to offer these patients the most up-to-date treatment including access to clinical trials.

Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center is the region’s first academic-based facility to combine all heart and vascular-related services, programs and technology under one roof. The technologies, techniques and treatments they develop at UC San Diego Health are setting new standards in vascular and cardiac care — for their patients and for the world.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Urey graduated with his medical degree from the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. He completed fellowships in both advanced heart failure and heart transplantation at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he was also a resident in internal medicine.

An expert in his field, the doctor is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Alongside his clinical role, he serves as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he trains medical students, interns and residents.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).
