Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Suguru Ohira, who serves patients in Valhalla, New York.

An exceptional cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Ohira is in practice at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. His clinical interests include coronary artery bypass grafting; valve surgery; surgery for the thoracic aorta and pulmonary artery; as well as surgery for heart failure, including cardiac transplantation, ventricular assist devices, and other mechanical circulatory support devices.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Ohira received his medical degree from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan, where he also received his surgical training. He also received his Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) in Medicine from the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, before completing a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, with broad exposure to complex cardiac surgical cases and surgical management of heart failure.

On a professional level, he is an active member of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Japanese Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Japanese Society for Vascular Surgery, and the Japan Surgical Society. He has published on coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and valve replacement procedures, aortic dissection, as well as the surgical treatment of heart failure.

As for his academic appointments, Dr. Ohira serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the New York Medical College.
