Get to know X-Ray Bone Densitometry Technician Mary Jane DellaVecchia, who serves patients in Gilroy, California.

Mary Jane is a certified X-ray bone densitometry technologist who works at the private practice of Dr. Samar M. Charabaty, rheumatologist, in Gilroy, California, which she joined in 2009. There, she interacts directly with patients to provide different types of imaging for arthritis, osteoporosis, and autoimmune diseases, as well as remains passionate about communicating to them the ways that they can manage their health concerns through exercise, supplements, and diet. 

Among her academic and professional affiliations, Mary Jane attended Foundation for Osteoporosis Research & Education in Oakland, California and was awarded her Bone Densitometry Technology degree in 2006. Upon graduation, she proceeded to work for Altos Oaks Medical Group Inc/El Camino Women’s Hospital from 2006 until 2014. 

A member of the Morgan Hill Historical Society and the International Society for Clinical Bone Densitometry, she is listed on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. She feels that her success is attributable primarily to her interest in learning about the human body and health issues. 

Bone densitometry is a test like an X-ray that quickly and accurately measures the density of bone. It is used primarily to detect osteopenia or osteoporosis, diseases in which the bone’s mineral and density are low and the risk of fractures is increased. Bone densitometry technologists are radiology professionals who are responsible for measuring patients’ bone mass to determine bone health, especially for the purpose of diagnosing osteoporosis and other bone diseases.

Working in a team-based setting where everyone is committed to patient improvement is the main reason why Mary Jane chose this particular field. To her, the fast pace of working for so many doctors and meeting their deadlines while documenting facts and ensuring patient safety is a complex, yet exhilarating challenge.
