Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Timothy I. Carter, who serves patients in West Islip, New York.

Dr. Carter is an attending cardiothoracic surgeon in the St. Francis Hospital Open Heart Surgery Program at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. 

A member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center is a 537-bed non-profit teaching hospital located in West Islip, New York. The hospital contains one-hundred nursing home beds and operates a Level II trauma center. “We are committed to providing the highest quality and compassionate health care and comfort to the whole person – mind, body and spirit. After completing his undergraduate studies at Colgate University, Dr. Carter relocated to the New York area. He earned his medical degree from the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, after which he stayed on to complete his general surgery training. Wanting to further his education, he traveled to Philadelphia to complete his cardiac surgery training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Among the doctor’s most notable achievements, he is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, which is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest. 

Moreover, he is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. 

On a more personal note, Dr. Carter is happily married with children.
