Located on Baltimore Pike in Media, Pennsylvania, The Sally Balin Medical Center is a state-of-the-art medical facility specializing in dermatology, cosmetic surgery, and longevity medicine. Dedicated to Dr. Balin’s mother, Sally Balin, the center opened its doors in December 1997. It contains outpatient examination and treatment areas, patient lounges, a recovery area, special facilities for phototherapy, as well as various types of lasers.
One of Dr. Balin’s many goals in life was to develop a comprehensive skin treatment center with all of the amenities he currently has under one roof, including a research laboratory. Pertaining to his academic career, Dr. Balin received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1974. He then went on to receive his Doctorate (PhD) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. Following his residency within the Department of Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, he did residencies in dermatology and dermatopathology at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Finally, he received his training in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Committed to excellence, the doctor is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD), and a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery (FACMS).
Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Balin has held clinical faculty positions at The Rockefeller University Hospital, The New York Hospital, Cornell University Medical College, and The Medical College of Pennsylvania. While at The Rockefeller University, he directed a laboratory for nine years where he conducted research on discovering molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the aging process. He has also taught courses on dermatology, skin surgery, and anatomy, and has trained residents in dermatology and postdoctoral fellows in academic biomedical research. Before joining The Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, he was a Clinical Professor of Dermatology & Research Professor of Pathology at The Medical College of Pennsylvania, which is now known as Drexel University School of Medicine.

A dermatologist is a specialist doctor who manages skin diseases and deals with both internal and external causes and some cosmetic concerns involving the skin. Dermatological duties include taking consultations, providing screening tests, and undertaking non-invasive surgical procedures.
World-renowned, Dr. Balin has authored over 135 research papers, chapters in medical textbooks and encyclopedias, abstracts, and electronic internet chapters. He is the co-author of ‘The Life of the Skin’ with Dr. Loretta Pratt, which was published in 1997 by Bantam Books.
For his outstanding medical achievements, he has received multiple awards, including the Mosby Scholarship Award by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; the Wilton H. Earle Award by the Society for In Vitro Biology; the Outstanding Achievement in Life Sciences-Advances in Clinical Medicine Award by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine; the American Medical Association Physicians Recognition Award; the American Academy of Dermatology Continuing Medical Education Award; and the Quality Control Program in Dermatopathology awarded by the American Society of Dermatopathology. Furthermore, he has been honored by being elected to membership in Phi Eta Sigma (scholastic honorary society), Phi Beta Kappa (scholastic honorary society), Alpha Omega Alpha (medical honorary society), and Sigma Xi (scientific honorary society).
In honor of his clinical expertise, Dr. Balin has been interviewed about various subjects, including skin cancer and aging, on radio and television. His scientific papers are peer-reviewed and focus on basic aging research, nutrition, wound healing, as well as clinical and experimental dermatology. He was one of the first scientists to grow human skin in the laboratory and to then take the skin and place it on wounds to help them heal.
