After high school, Dr. Lewis accepted the National Institutes of Health’s prestigious Minorities Accessing Research Careers scholarship at Delaware State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and minor in Chemistry. During his undergraduate experience, he became increasingly interested in research, leading him to study cardiovascular disease with his college mentor. In addition, he took part in summer research at prestigious institutions such as DuPont/Merck Pharmaceuticals, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and The University of California at Los Angeles.
He earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his time there, he worked in the laboratory of David G. Kaufman, MD, PhD, studying the roles of the estrogen receptors in the development of endometrial cancer. Of note, he wrote, and was awarded, a highly sought after Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award.
Wanting to further his education, Dr. Lewis obtained his medical degree with Research Tract from the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D,C. Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency in obstetrics & gynecology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. This was followed by a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology & infertility at the National Institutes of Health.
A Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG).
