Get to know Otolaryngologist Dr. Bella Onwumbiko, who studies in Boston, Massachusetts. 

A 2020 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Onwumbiko is an Otorhinolaryngology Resident at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. 

The Department of Otolaryngology at Tufts Medical Center offers a postgraduate residency training program in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The program is dedicated to the training for clinical and academic careers involving disorders of the head and neck. Clinical and administrative responsibilities are progressively advanced throughout the post-graduate years. 

In her prior roles, Dr. Onwumbiko served as a Medical Assistant at J. Frank Pediatrics (May 2015 – August 2016), a Research Assistant at Magwene Lab (January 2014 – April 2014), a Lead Researcher on a Pharmacology Independent Study at Duke University (August 2013 – December 2013), and as an Undergraduate Computer Science Intern / Researcher at Duke University (May 2013 – August 2013).

In direct affiliation with her professional industry, she is a member of the American Medical Association, the Association of Women Surgeons, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Among her volunteer efforts, Dr. Onwumbiko served as a Student Mentoring & Academic Reinforcement Tutor with the Duke Pre-Health Volunteer Program, Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital (August 2013 – May 2014), a Mentor / Academic Tutor with Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering, and Science (February 2013 – May 2016), and as an Elementary School (1st Grade) Tutor & Teaching Assistant at Duke Child Connect (August 2012 – December 2012).

Otorhinolaryngology is a surgical subspecialty within medicine that deals with the surgical and medical management of conditions of the head and neck. Doctors who specialize in this area are called otorhinolaryngologists, otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, or ENT surgeons or physicians.

On a more personal note, Dr. Onwumbiko is fluent in numerous computer languages, including Java, Python, C++, C, Matlab, R, Linux/Unix, and HTML. In addition to English, she speaks French (professional working proficiency), Igbo (limited working proficiency), and Spanish (elementary proficiency).
