Get to know Neurologist Dr. Amy Gutierrez, who serves patients in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Gutierrez is a practicing, fellowship-trained neurologist with Orlando Health Neuroscience and Rehabilitation Institute Neurosurgery Group & Orlando Health Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center.

Orlando Health Neuroscience and Rehabilitation Institute Neurosurgery Group is a highly specialized practice that is the first of its kind to offer expedited care for neurosurgery patients. Patients are taken in when they call – within 24 hours for urgent cases or within two days for non-urgent cases. 

Orlando Health Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center brings together experts from a wide variety of specialties — including neurologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, and more – to create and deliver a holistic care plan focused on unique needs. Whether that means comprehensive disease management, symptom management or rehabilitation services, they remain at patients’ side every step of the way to help them live full, active lives.

Growing up in New York and Miami, Dr. Gutierrez said she always knew she wanted to be a doctor, and she always knew she wanted to study and treat the brain. “I knew I was going to be either a psychiatrist or a neurologist and the nervous system has always been something that just fascinated me.”

On her path to medicine, she earned her medical degree from East Central University in the Dominican Republic. Her extensive post-graduate training includes a residency in adult psychiatry at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, New York; a residency in neurology at Louisiana State University, New Orleans; a fellowship in child psychiatry at St. Luke’s–Roosevelt Hospital, New York; and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology Louisiana State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Gutierrez was a founding member of the ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic at LSU Health Science Center. She worked collaboratively with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the ALS Association, providing care to patients and their families. In addition, she was involved in research with the North Eastern ALS Society and as a member of the ALS Clinic at the New Orleans VA Clinic. She currently is running the Orlando Health Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic. They are part of the ALSA Nationally Recognized Clinics. 

Passionate about her profession, she is board-certified in neurology and neuromuscular medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists. She is also board-certified in electrodiagnostic medicine by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Having more than 20 years of clinical experience with MS,ALS and Neuromuscular disorders,  Dr. Gutierrez has held leadership roles with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and MDA. Moreover, she has been the principal investigator for many research trials. 

A Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurodiagnostic Medicine, she is a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Hispanic Medical Association, Florida Medical Society and the American Medical Association. 

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.
