Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Andre C. Matthews, who serves patients in Mesa, Arizona.

Dr. Matthews is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who has been in private practice at Baywood Orthopedic Clinic in Mesa, Arizona since 1985. Focusing on the hip, shoulder, and knee, he specializes in the repair damage to the bones and muscles in the body.

With extensive experience in counseling both patients and orthopedists in training, he has taught a variety of classes ranging from basic science for orthopedic residents to lectures for physical therapists in the orthopedic community.

Having been helping individuals to resume their normal, active lives with unsurpassed medical knowledge and surgical skills, Dr. Matthews is also a consultant to Phoenix Indian Medical Center, Maricopa Medical Center, and the Carl T. Hayden Veterans’ Administration Medical Center. He was previously chairman of the Surgery Department’s Utilization Review Committee at Valley Lutheran Hospital.

Practicing medicine in the state of Arizona, he is affiliated with Banner Baywood Medical Center and  Arizona Spine and Joint Hospital. He is committed to providing patients with effective orthopedic care – which means that non-surgical options are always explored first.

Possessing a strong educational background, Dr. Matthews graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati in 1975 and his Master of Arts degree in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1976. Four years later, in 1980, he earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Pursuing further training, he completed his internship in general surgery at Maricopa Medical Center in Arizona. He then went on to perform his residency in orthopedic surgery at Phoenix Affiliated Orthopedic.

With over four decades of experience, Dr. Matthews is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, he is a member of the American Medical Association and the Maricopa Medical Society.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

An authority in his field, Dr. Matthews has received many awards for his professional research and has published articles about orthopedic surgery.
