    There could potentially be a few different diagnoses associated with your symptoms. The first could be cervical radiculopathy, where a nerve root is irritated, referring to pain into the shoulder and arm. Secondly, you could have thoracic outlet syndrome, which would cause numbness and tingle into the entirety of the hand. Which fingers do you feel the numbness and tingling in?     Dear Patient, Without performing an evaluation, it sounds as though it may be potentially that you 5th or 6th rib is in a faulty position, as it is likely "stuck down" causing pain with deep inhalation. With respect to your neck pain, is it still bothersome? Is the pain in the right shoulder blade and burning/numbness sensation? You may be experiencing some nerve root irritation of the right C5/C6 nerve root, leading to pain in the right shoulder blade region. I would recommend seeing you PCP to ensure that it is not referred pain from an internal organ, and if you are cleared seeking physical therapy to address your rib displacement or potential cervical radiculopathy.   • I have a very painful ankle due to an injury that occurred last week. What should I do?

    Dear FATD Patient, I would recommend that if you cannot bear weight on the ankle or walk on it for 4 steps or more, that it would be best to see your primary care provider who will likely provide you with crutches and a brace or CAM walker boot. Otherwise, I would apply ice and purchase an ankle compression sleeve to help with the swelling. Hope this helps and that you are feeling better soon. READ MORE

  • Is it normal to have pain and swelling after an arthroscopic surgery?

    Dear FATD Patient, Following an arthroscopic knee surgery at the 3-month time period, swelling is likely an indication of increased weight bearing or walking, and this is typical if his activity tolerance has increased. I would recommend a knee compression sleeve to help minimize the swelling. With respect to the pain, there could be a multitude of factors, and an examination of the knee would be necessary to identify the etiology.     Dear FATD Patient, With respect to your question, it sounds as though you are experiencing postural syndrome, which is likely due to maintaining a sustained posture for prolonged periods of time, as you alluded to. Was there a mechanism of injury associated with the mid thoracic back pain? I would suggest stretching of the anterior pectoralis muscles implementing the doorway stretch, and strengthening the periscapular muscles performing using theraband rows, extension, and other various exercises to strengthen the posterior musculature.   • Why do I have a pain in my knee every time i bend it?

    Dear Patient, With respect to your question, it sounds as though this is likely due to overuse, as your training regime sounds very rigorous and the high impact and stress placed on the knee joints during running can evidently lead to these types of injuries. I would need to see the exact location of the pain to identify the underlying pathology, yet I believe that gout is very unlikely due to the copious amount of running.     Dear Patient, Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-invasive peripheral stimulation modality that is implemented for pain relief. Its mechanism of action is through the blockade of nociceptive impulses (sensation of pain), by inducing the production of neurochemicals such as opioids, serotonin, acetylcholine, noradrenaline and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).   • How long does it take for an ankle ligament tear to heal?

    Dear Patient, Depending on the grade of your initial tear (Grade I is stretching of the ligament or a very mild tear, with little or no instability at the joint. Grade II is a more serious but still incomplete tear, with some looseness in the joint. Grade III is a completely torn or ruptured ligament) the healing potential will vary. I would perform ankle stability, balance and proprioceptive exercises, as this will ultimately contribute to greater dynamic mobility and stability of your ankle. Ligamentous injuries do take longer to recover, as a muscular injury typically takes 4-6 weeks and a ligamentous injury may take 6-8 weeks due to the lack of blood supply. The ligamentous laxity may persist, depending on the degree of the sprain/tear. I would try conservative physical therapy, and on YouTube you can find some very good ankle exercises for proprioception and balance. I hope that this helps. READ MORE

Following a visit with you provider, seek Physical Therapy as an examination would need to be performed in order to identify the root of the problem, as it could be a whole host of things such as sacroiliac joint dysfunction, an "upslip" pubic shear or a multitude of other diagnoses.
