Get to know Addiction Psychiatrist Dr. Muhammad N. Iqbal, who serves patients in North Hills, California.

A top addiction psychiatrist, Dr. Iqbal evaluates, diagnoses, and treats people who suffer from impulse control conditions related to addiction. He is the Medical Director of Substance Use Disorder Clinics at Sepulveda VA Medical Center in North Hills, California, which is a part of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.

His responsibilities include management of substance use disorders clinic at Sepulveda VA, teaching psychiatry residents and fellows, and conducting faculty presentations. He is also the Associate Program Director of UCLA/VA Greater Los Angeles Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

Graduating with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Dow Medical College in Pakistan, Dr. Iqbal relocated to the United States to further his training. Once there, he completed his general psychiatry residency at New Bridge Medical Center and combined addiction psychiatry/NIDA T-32 research fellowship at Columbia University in the city of New York. 

The doctor’s research interest lies in evaluating the role of biomarkers in substance use disorders. He has conducted research evaluating the feasibility of rapid induction onto long-acting Buprenorphine injection for high potency synthetic opioid users. He has also authored and co-authored original articles, abstracts, book chapters, and poster presentations. 

Addiction psychiatry is a medical subspecialty within psychiatry that focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of people who are suffering from one or more disorders related to addiction. This may include disorders involving legal and illegal drugs, gambling, sex, food, and other impulse control disorders. An addiction psychiatrist can order or perform a wide variety of diagnostic and screening tests to diagnose chronic and acute mental health issues in patients with substance abuse disorders.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Iqbal enjoys travelling, exercising, and watching movies.
