Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Ghassan Alzayer, who serves patients in Washington, D.C.

A board-certified Gastroenterologist, Dr. Alzayer is affiliated with Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Georgetown University Medical Center is an internationally recognized academic health and science center with a four-part mission of research, teaching, service and patient care. The largest, most prominent Catholic medical center in the country, its mission is carried out with a dedication to the Catholic, Jesuit principles of public service and cura personalis, or “care of the whole person.”

Born and raised in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Alzayer graduated with his medical degree from the University of Dammam in 2010. After relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Baystate Medical Center / University of Massachusetts in 2017. 

Subsequently, he was selected by the Internal Medicine faculty for a Chief Resident role where he had various clinical, leadership, and teaching roles for training residents including lectures, Internal Medicine grand rounds, journal clubs, and simulation labs and worked along the faculty in the improvement of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Finally, he completed his Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Georgetown University in 2021.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in gastroenterology and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Alzayer is a proud member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Medical Association.

As for his academic appointment, he serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

On a more personal note, Dr. Alzayer attributes his success to his training and his desire for constant improvement and education. In his free time, he enjoys soccer, cooking, trying new restaurants, and traveling.
