  • My urine has a strong odor?

Certain medications as well as dietary factors can contribute to various odors of the urine. However, in a man in his late 60s, BPH is a common problem. This may reduce the flow of urine and decrease the bladder's ability to fully empty. Over-the-counter cold medications, especially those that contain pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine, can lead to partial or total urinary retention, especially in men with pre-existing BPH and bladder outlet obstruction. Urinary retention (partial or complete) can lead to stale urine in the bladder and increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTI). Strong odor in this setting could be due to an infection and should be evaluated by a physician (preferably a urologist). You can find more information about BPH at https://www.radroboticsurgery.com/bph and https://www.radroboticsurgery.com/bladderhealth READ MORE

  • My father has been diagnosed with obstructive uropathy. Can this be treated?

Obstructive uropathy is another name for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH. It is a condition in which the prostate enlarges as men get older. Over 70% of men in their 60s have BPH symptoms so it is very common. While BPH is a benign condition and unrelated to prostate cancer, it can greatly affect a man's quality of life. The prostate is a male reproductive gland, about the size of a walnut, that produces fluid for semen. The prostate surrounds the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. As the prostate enlarges, it presses on and blocks the urethra, causing bothersome urinary symptoms such as: Frequent need to urinate both day and night. Weak or slow urinary stream A sense that you cannot completely empty your bladder. Difficulty or delay in starting urination Urgent feeling of needing to urinate A urinary stream that stops and starts If you suffer from the above symptoms, you are not alone. BPH is one of the leading reasons for men to visit a urologist. There are many options to treat BPH and your urologist can review those with you. • What is azoospermia?

Infertility affects about 15% of couple in the United States. Half of the cases are due to a female factor, 25% due to a male factor, and the rest due to a combination of male and female factors . Of those men affected, 10-20% are found to have azoospermia. Azoospermia is the absence of sperm in the ejaculate. Azoospermia is grouped into three categories: pretesticular, intratesticular, and post testicular. This means that some cases are due to a problem in the testicles and others are due to factors outside of the testicles such as blockage of the tubes that carry sperm or hormonal imbalances. Pretesticular azoospermia is due to a defect in the hormones that send signal the testicles to make sperm. Intratesticular azoospermia refers to a problem in which the testicles are unable to respond to the hormone levels in your body. Post testicular azoospermia refers to a mechanical problem where the sperm that is made in the testicles is unable to travel through the tubing to get to where it needs. Depending on which diagnosis a man has, there may be various different options available to help a couple achieve pregnancy. It is advisable to seek out a urologist with special training or interest in infertility. READ MORE

  • Why do I have a curved penis?

Peyronie's disease affects about 9% of men in the United States. It is a disorder of scar tissue formation near or around the tubes (corpora cavernosa) that allow a man to have an erection. Some factors contributing to peyronie's disease are advanced age, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, dupuytren's disease, prostate surgery, disorders of testosterone, trauma to the penis, and congenital penile curvature (CPC). If the curvature has always been present, then congenital penile curvature is the most likely diagnosis, although this would have to be evaluated by a urologist in the office. Regardless of cause, treatment is only indicated if there is bothersome dysfunction such as difficulty with intercourse or pain. A thorough evaluation by an experienced urologist often leads to appropriate treatment options, if necessary. READ MORE
