Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. Huan Huan (Joanne) Sun, who serves patients throughout the State of New York.

A committed surgical oncologist, Dr. Sun is affiliated with Nuvance Health Surgical Oncology, seeing patients at Vassar Brothers Medical Center and Putnam Hospital.

The Nuvance Health Surgical Oncology team uses surgery to diagnose, treat and reduce pain from cancer. Part of The Nuvance Health Cancer Institute, they are committed to providing compassionate, patient-focused care to patients and their families.

Pertaining to her educational pursuits, Dr. Sun graduated with her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 2008, and completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2010. She completed her fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the New York University Medical Center in 2018.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS), and is board-certified in thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. She also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.
