Get to know Family Physician Dr. Nzube C. Okonkwo, who serves patients in Norman, Oklahoma.

A hard-working, diligent, compassionate and empathic family physician, Dr. Okonkwo tends to patients at Norman Regional Hospital in Oklahoma. He has significant experience in inpatient and long-term care.

“I chose family medicine because I like a bit of everything, however I discovered my love for the elderly population, hence my decision to obtain additional training in Geriatrics after my residency. This population is underserved and has complex medication comorbidities” expressed the doctor.

A native of Nigeria, he moved to the United States at age 17 to attend college. He earned his medical degree from the Windsor University School of Medicine, and completed his residency in family medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Finally, he completed his fellowship in geriatric medicine at the Hennepin County Medical Center.

An authority in his field, the doctor is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice family medicine and its sub-specialties.

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.

Happily married to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse, Dr. Okonkwo’s hobbies include running and soccer. He played soccer in college at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
