What's wrong with me?
Hello, While a complete assessment and diagnosis cannot be offered with the limited information you provided, I can say that when one is not getting sufficient sleep, mental health and wellbeing are significantly impacted. I would recommend reviewing the sleep hygiene tips from the Mayo Clinic to see if your sleep problems might have a simple solution httpswww.mayoclinic.orghealthylifestyleadulthealthindepthsleepart20048379. If not, I would advise you to consult a sleep specialist. What are some relaxation techniques or coping mechanisms that can help me?
One of the most basic techniques for dealing with stress or anxiety (i.e., common triggers that might require the use of a relaxation technique) is simply to stop and take a deep breath, then refocus. Taking a deep breath is a great in-the-moment intervention that does not take a lot of time. The various mindfulness practices (i.e., labeling, body scan, walking meditation to name a few) are great for developing a calm, peaceful inner state as an alternative when triggered. READ MORE
Can anti-anxiety medications help with depression?
The answer to your question depends on the actual medication is. People being treated for anxiety are generally prescribed an SSRI/SNRI for mood stabilization and a Benzodiazepine or similar medication to reduce panic attack-like symptoms in the moment. A Benzodiazepine would not be helpful for depression. However, SSRIs are commonly prescribed for depression. It is also worth noting that the two diagnoses (i.e., anxiety and depression) are often comorbid (aka they occur together) so it is not surprising that medication that is prescribed for individuals with one disorder is also prescirbed for individuals with the other. I hope this helps. READ MORE
Can you treat schizophrenia?
I think what you may be asking here is can you "cure" schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a lifelong condition and while some positive change is possible, the change will be incremental over a long period of time (i.e., years not weeks or months). In other words, it cannot be "cured." Schizophrenia can be treated with a combination of psychoactive medication and behavioral interventions and skills training. Medication helps to manage symptoms that may include auditory and/or visual hallucinations. Behavioral interventions and skills training can help individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia function better in social, vocational, and interpersonal environments. READ MORE
