Do prosthetic limbs hurt?
A properly fitted prosthesis should not hurt. The socket, which is the part that interfaces with the residual limb, is typically fabricated after fitting a diagnostic "check socket". During the check socket fitting, the prosthetist should make adjustments to any areas that cause discomfort in order to avoid pain and discomfort in the definitive socket. That being said, changes occur over time in the limb, which can lead to discomfort and sometimes pain. These issues should be addressed by your prosthetist to eliminate the discomfort or pain. What are the problems with prosthetic limbs?

Are prosthetic limbs permanent?
No, and your first prosthesis will likely have the shortest functional life due to stump maturation. As you begin to walk on your prosthesis fluid is pushed out of the limb which causes stump shrinkage. Muscle atrophy also occurs due to the muscles no longer having the same function as they did previously. The first socket is often replaced within 6-12 months. After the first one, socket replacements are required with less frequency. Let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck! READ MORE
