Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) is the nation’s federal health professions academy — akin to the undergraduate programs of the United States military academies at West Point, Annapolis and Colorado Springs. Like the academies, students are not charged tuition; they repay the nation for their education through service. In many respects, their curricula and educational experiences are similar to those of civilian academic health centers, with one important difference: their emphasis on military health care, leadership, readiness and public health sets them apart.

Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Neurobiology and Physiology from the University of Maryland College Park, Dr. Charny earned his Master of Science degree in Biohazardous Threat Agents and Emerging Infectious Diseases at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2006. He graduated with his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in 2010.

Subsequently, he went on to complete his internship and residency in emergency medicine at the Brooke Army Medical Center in 2012, where he was Chief Resident. He then went on to serve with the US Army at the Womack Army Medical Center, and was the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo in 2014.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (FAAEM), the doctor is board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). The ABEM is one of 24 medical specialty certification boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Emergency medicine, also known as accident and emergency medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. An emergency physician works in an emergency department to care for acutely ill or injured patients on an unscheduled basis.
